Birth of Eros

In the beginning the black wings of Night enveloped all in darkness. Yet in this darkness where nothing stirred safe the restless wind, the germ of life was conceived within Night. Soon after she laid a great silver egg which, self incubated, hatched and out sprang, entwined with a serpent, the god, Eros, also called Protogonos, first born, and Phanes, I bring to light. The god was armed with a bow, the sting whose golden dove feathered darts caused desire, those of the leaden owl feathered, indifference. So began the world.
